How Rest & Sleep Impact Your Creativity
As artists, we often feel like we have to work tirelessly to create our best work. Does this sound like you?:
Staying up late to complete projects and pulling all nighters
Scrolling on social media for hours (likely comparing yourself to others or doing “market research”)
Working non-stop
Feeling like you have to “keep up”
Not putting your physical, mental, spiritual wellness needs before your work/business/job
You work everyday with no days off
However, rest is just as important for our creativity and overall well-being as our work itself.
Studies have shown that sleep deprivation can negatively impact cognitive function, creativity, and productivity. According to a study published in the journal Sleep, people who sleep less than 6 hours a night are more likely to be less creative and have difficulty focusing and problem-solving.
Additionally, overworking can lead to burnout, which can be detrimental to our creative process. Burnout can lead to decreased motivation, exhaustion, and decreased ability to focus, ultimately leading to a decrease in productivity.
HERE ARE 10 QUICK TIPS TO IMPROVE REST AND SLEEP:
Stick to a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends.
Create a comfortable sleep environment, with a cool temperature, comfortable mattress and pillows, and minimal noise and light.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and large meals before bedtime.
Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, such as taking a warm bath, reading, or practicing relaxation techniques.
Limit screen time before bed and consider using blue light filters on electronic devices.
Get regular exercise, but avoid intense physical activity before bedtime.
Manage stress and anxiety through mindfulness techniques, therapy, or other stress-reducing activities.
Consider using white noise or calming music to help you fall asleep.
If you're still having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor to rule out any underlying health issues.
Take a day off each week (a Sabbath day) to rest, recharge, and relax.
YOUR HOMEWORK: Pick 2 or 3 things from the above list to commit to this week to improve rest and sleep. (your health & creativity literally depend on it!)
It's important to remember that taking time to rest and recharge can actually increase our creativity and productivity. Taking breaks, practicing self-care, and getting enough sleep can actually boost our ability to problem-solve and come up with new ideas.
So, next time you feel like you're in a creative rut or feeling overwhelmed, consider taking a break to rest and recharge. Your creativity will thank you!
